Although I was born in Germany, my family moved to Spain when I was twelve years old (that is the reason for my native language level of German and Spanish). After finishing medical school at the Universidad de la Laguna, in Tenerife, I started my 5- year specialist training in Internal Medicine at the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Insular - Materno Infantil, in GranCanaria.
Soon I became aware of the paramount importance of an individualised and holistic (whole-person) approach. I could see a clear link between the emotional state and the health disturbances my patients were suffering from, and that prescribing drugs alone would not resolve their problems. Every person is different and has his/her own special needs that should be addressed individually. This prompted me to gain further education in complementary and holistic therapies or CAM as otherwise known, including an MSc in Homeopathic Medicine at the Universitat de Barcelona that has close collaboration relationship with RLHH, MFHom qualification in Bristol, Master’s practitioner in NLP(neurolinguistic programming) and Master’s in Ericksonian Hypnosis, as well as advanced training in Bio-analisis e Inversión EmocionalTM (several courses in Málaga and Barcelona), related to identify and solve specific emotional conflicts in the patient's life that may aggravate or even lead to health disturbances (from allergies, to autoimmune diseases or from depression to cancer).
Tuesdays and Thursdays I do work a the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (RLHIM - NHS), taking care of the Integrated Cancer Care clinics together with my colleague Dr Kassab. The rest of the week I do work at my private practice, mainly taking care cancer patients, offering complementary cancer care providing patient with additional support to make their treatments (chemotherapy, radiotherapy or surgery) more tolerable*.
In addition, together with three other colleagues (all integrated medicine practitioners) from the RLHIM, we are taking care of the Homeopathic Education in the UK, providing training for those who are interested in the art of Homeopathy.
Until recently, our genes were thought to rule our life, our health, however, since the discovery of Epigenetic, this paradigm is no longer true. Continuously increasing research is showing how our lifestyle is influencing our DNA expression, and how, not only environmental factors, such as food or pollution but also emotions are able to up- or down-regulated genes. Although, there is still much research to be performed in the field of epigenetics, yet certain complementary medicines have shown to be able to make a real difference when combined, in the right way, with conventional medicine. Many patients with conditions such as chronic pain, autoimmune diseases or cancer, for instance, are very likely to suffer from anxiety, sleep disturbances, depression and pain.
In addition, they also suffer from the side effects of chemo- and radiotherapy, steroids and other immune-suppressors, as well as those caused by antidepressants, analgesics and other medicines they need. All these factors have a negative impact on the patient’s quality of life, and can eventually lead to drug (over-)prescription. Furthermore, over prescription, that many times result from prescribing new drugs to counteract side effects of other drugs, is continuously increasing. It is well known that drugs are the third leading cause of death after heart diseases and cancer in the USA and Europe. Many health practitioners are aware of this concern, however, only qualified professionals are capable of making effective changes in patients' prescription.
Addressing the cause your concern(s), making changes in your lifestyle(nutrition, meditation, changing habits, thoughts and emotions), taking only the very necessary drugs, and substituting chemical medicines for more natural medicines (with much less side effects) whenever possible, are the main aspects to get the best results. Why should you use conventional medicine alone when you can benefit from the combination of a holistic approach?
I provide you therefore with the best of integrated medicine, starting with a complete medical assessment, revising your clinical history (including blood tests and other complementary tests) and a complete physical examination in order to design an individual holistic approach, adapted to your needs.
*Complementary therapies are NOT a substitution for conventional medicine but can be used alongside to complement conventional medicine. I always recommend discussing complementary therapies with your oncologist to avoid interactions and increase the benefits of INTEGRATED MEDICINE.
