Although the best way to get the necessary nutrients for our good health is through a healthy diet, sometimes, our body does benefit from an extra boost.

Administering micronutrients intravenously has the advantage of bypassing the digestive system and going directly into the bloodstream. Some micronutrients, such as vitamin C, can only be absorbed in limited quantities via our intestine, and if taken in high doses, it can cause side effects, such as diarrhoea.

Infusions or IV Drips as otherwise known, can be of special benefit when food intake is reduced due to nausea and/or mucositis secondary to cancer treatments, for example. The micronutrients are administered dissolved in saline (ClNa 0.9%) which also provides optimum hydration.

Vitamin C is water soluble, and the body does not store it. To maintain adequate levels of vitamin C, we need a continuous intake.

Vitamin C plays an important role in a number of bodily functions including the production of collagen, L-carnitine, and some neurotransmitters. Vitamin C is great for healing wounds after surgery because it helps repair tissue and reduce damage from inflammation and oxidation.

Vitamin C may help patients with cancer. As an antioxidant, it protects the body against oxidative stress and the subsequent damage caused by the free radicals released. It helps prevent the oxidation of other molecules and to regenerate other antioxidants in the body, too.

High doses of vitamin C have been found to reduce the speed of growth of some types of cancerous tissue. Researchers have proposed using vitamin C in cancer patients whose treatment options are limited.

The National Cancer Institute report several studies that used high dose vitamin C intravenously with few side effects.

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet approved the use of intravenous vitamin C in treatment of cancer patients, including those undergoing chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and it is not recognised as a treatment.

Glutathione, a compound that is produced in the liver, is the body’s most essential antioxidant, and its ability to neutralise free radicals in cells and aids in detoxification processes has highlighted it as a promising therapeutic for a wide range of diseases and disorders.

Glutathione protects cells from oxidants is through recycling of vitamins C and E, and facilitates the excretion of mercury out of cells, specially out of the brain. It is vital to mitochondrial function and maintenance of mitochondrial DNA (the mitochondria are the powerhouse of our cells).
