La medicina convencional se centra en el arte del diagnóstico y el tratamiento farmacológico.
La medicina convencional pueden ser de mucha ayuda en condiciones como dolor agudo o en las infecciones. Son de vital importancia en situaciones agudas como un infarto cardiaco, sepsis, trombo-embolismo en las que los fármacos de acción rápida marcan la diferencia entre la vida y la muerte.
Sin embargo, en enfermedades crónicas, la medicina convencional por sí sola, puede ser insuficiente además de causar efectos secundarios.
Desde mi punto de vista, el mejor tratamiento consiste en la adecuada combinación de la medicina convencional con terapias complementarias, ya que obtiene los máximos beneficios con los efectos secundarios mínimos.
Esto no siempre es fácil ya que se requiere un amplio conocimiento de muchos campos diferentes, y es justo aquí donde más se nota la importancia de la medicina integrativa.
Las infecciones pueden ser causadas por patógenos como las bacterias o los virus. Nuestro sistema inmune lucha contra estos patógenos mediante la producción de células que los destruyen. Nuestro cuerpo necesita elevar la temperatura para incrementar la producción de estas células. Si nuestro sistema inmune falla, la infección se expande pudiendo causar sepsis, e incluso la muerte si no se trata correctamente.
Así que, si tomas fármacos como por ejemplo el paracetamol o el ibuprofeno para bajar la fiebre (sin indicación médica adecuada), también estás impidiendo la producción de las células de nuestro sistema inmune. Si tomas antibióticos cuando no estén indicados, como por ejemplo en una infección vírica, no sólo eliminas a las baterías beneficiosas para nuestro cuerpo, sino que también facilitas la creación de mecanismos de resistencia frente a los antibióticos.
Por lo tanto, si interrumpes el proceso febril cuando no está indicado, previenes el adecuado desarrollo del sistema inmune, facilitando la reinfección en un futuro próximo, ya que no se han creado los anticuerpos correspondientes.
